Getting your mouse out of a game

Does anyone know how to get yor mouse out of a game window (eg. Wolfenstein) to your desktop and then back to the game? I want to check my email for example without quitting the game and then get back to the game again, but the game is holding my mouse to move the character and can't get out of the game window. Is there a way of doing this?

Could try starting another X session for any games played.

    IIRC it is :

    startx -- -:1

Then a ctl-alt-f7 gets you back to your desktop and then ctl-alt-f8 will retun you to your game.
