hello,
i prefer gamepads for these - and i have nothing but nice things to say about my gravis usb one.
I would like to get a joystick to be used with first-person shooter games like Quake, Wolfenstein, etc. What kind of joystick would you guys recommend?

Exactly which model do you have? Is it 100% compatible with Linux? I've only played these games with keyboard and mouse and my biggest problem is controlling the different movements (move forward-back, move left-right, look up-down, turn right-left) at the same time. How do you do these with a gamepad?
i have this one:

i personally like the keyboard mouse combo better for 1st person shooter, i have the gamepad for a flighter game (decent from loki) and for NES. SNES emulators.
and tuxracer too!
I have a M$ Sidewinder, works great in Linux. But honestly, you should really learn to use the keyboard/mouse to do it all - many more options. With my setup, the mouse looks around (mlook) and hte buttons do my shooting, and my left hand controls all movement and weapons switching.
I started playing QuakeWorld with a joystick and was decent - but the keyboard/mouse combo is far superior imho once you master it.
