Bravo to Gnome team.
Now, the text fonts in Gnome 2.4 looks a lot better than ever ...... I just dist-upgraded my Debian testing and man, all is wonderful ....
actaully did you upgrade your freetype as well, that might have been the key - the font handling did change from 2.2 to 2.4 AFAIK since it's handled by freetype and fontconfig - of course Pango might have had some improvements but I didn't notice them.
The newer freetype releases (+2.1.5) have a really nice free hinter, where as it's rather cruddy in the previous releases, there are however still a few tricks to getting good fonts that are worth experimenting with.
Well, I don't really play around with fonts and all that. I basically take whatever they default in.
I don't much worship eye-candy either but I do appreciate if anything looks good.
All I did was dist-upgrade thing and the next thing I know, fonts got a lot better. I haven't dist-upgrade in about 3 weeks and 167 packages out of my box got upgraded.

probly but I like it so far .... No complain from me.
