Hi,
I am new to this site, but am hunting for the forum with the people who can help me. :-)
I installed PCLinuxOS 2010 KDE, to hopefully replace the 2009 version I am already running.
The old system is fine, I am using it at this moment to type to you.
The new system is NOT fine, as follows (in no particular order):
1) I can ping my ADSL router, but cannot open its http interface in a browser.
2) I can ping around the world, by either IP or DNS name.
3) I successfully opened an XIrc chat window, and used Bitorrent to open
a torrent file and begin a download.
4) I can NOT get Synaptic package manager to download repository listings, it hangs waiting for a connection.
5) I can NOT get a web browser to connect to a website (problem occurs in both Firefox and Konqueror), they sit and say "waiting for ...". This is the same when I specify an IP address or a DNS name.
6) When I used ftp:// to try to contact my ADSL router by IP number, I was prompted for a password, showing that communication is possible, even though I get no response when I try http.
7) There was one web site that worked! support.mozilla.com

None of the problems that I had in the 2010 version occur in my old 2009 system. A simple reboot gets me full use the Internet. In searching for advice on networking problems I found an article on this site http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch04_:_Simple_Network_Troubleshootin g which said that networking problems are usually either slow response times from the remote server, or a complete lack of connectivity. As you see, I have neither. I have *partial* connectivity.

Any idea why? and what I can do to fix it?
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shimon

I'm not exactly sure where my problem is. I use putty to connect to various spots and haven't had many issues like this before.

I'm connecting to an IBM AIX box via Putty Telnet.

Using the "default" settings... most of the extended keys (insert, delete, home, arrows, keypad, etc) don't work like "normal". I tried a different Telnet program (IVT VT220) and had the same experience.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find some good advice on how to adjust AIX or Putty to act "normally" (up arrow goes thru history, left/right arrows go... well... left/right... delete works... etc)

I TRIED MANY DISTROS AND EITHER THE INTEL PROPRIETARY
BIOS OR ITS PROCESSORS ARE NOT VERY LINUX FRIENDLY.
I DECIDED, THEREFORE, TO NAVIGATE IN VESA, CAUSE I AM NOT
VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF VIDEO, I JUST WANTED
TO KEEP ON USING LINUX, UNFORTUNATELY THE DISTROS I HAVE TRIED
ARE KIND OF FORCING ME TO USE A INTEL PROPRIETARY DRIVE
WHICH DOES NOT WORK AND AT THE SAME TIME DOES NOT GRANT
ME THE OPTION OF A WORKABLE VESA CONFIGURATION. IF YOU
KNOW THE CONFIGURATION OF AN UP-TO-DATE LINUX DISTRO WHICH
EITHER RUNS WELL WITH INTEL DRIVERS OR IN VESA , GIMME A HINT,
AS I HAVE AN IMPRESSION WE HAVE BEEN PLAYED BOTH ENDS
AGAINST THE MIDDLE.

distro@distro:~$ lspci -v | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

I AM A POOR ENGLISH SPEAKER, I WROTE ABOUT THAT PLIGHT AT:

Just in case any of you fellow linux users can read in Portuguese,
in that page I explained the situation with more details.

I am very glad to go along with you here in spite of my language
skills limitations. Nice to Meet you All!
